1    CHECK AND CLEAN THE HYDRAULIC OIL SCREEN.    IF THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM WORKS AT ALL BUT GRADUALLY SLOWS OVER A FEW RUN CYCLES UNTIL IT  WILL NOT WORK 99% OF THE TIME THE PROBLEM IS THE OIL SCREEN.  

MOST OFTEN THE FIRST THOUGHT IS THAT THE HYDRAULIC PUMP IS BAD, BUT HYDRAULIC PUMPS ARE RUNNING IN RATHER CLEAN OIL SO THEY ARE LONGER LASTING THAN MOST METAL TO METAL DEVICES AND GENERALLY, IF GOING BAD, WILL SHOW LOWER POWER AT THE HEAVIEST WORK BUT WILL BE NORMAL WHEN LOW PRESSURE IS REQUIRED. 

THIS SCREEN IS OFTEN CALLED THE HYDRAULIC OIL FILTER THOUGH MOST OF THE TIME IT IS A VERY FINE MESH SCREEN AND NOT A FILTER.  THE OIL SCREEN IS USUALLY LOCATED IN A THING THAT LOOKS LIKE A FILTER CASE  ON THE LARGER HOSE (LOW PRESSURE HOSE, RETURN HOSE, HOSE COMING OUT OF THE HYDRAULIC OIL TANK, RESERVOIR, GOING TO THE PUMP).  THE SCREEN NEAR THE HYDRAULIC PUMP IS GETTING PLUGGED UP AND WILL NOT LET OIL RETURN TO THE HYDRAULIC PUMP TO BE PUMPED AND PRESSURIZED TO GO THE HYDRAULIC MOTORS TO DO WORK. 

ON TRACTORS AND OTHER FRAME HOUSING MACHINES THE SCREEN IN OFTEN BEHIND A RECTANGULAR STEEL PLATE HELD ON BY 4 BOLTS ON THE SIDE OR UNDER THE MIDDLE OF THE TRACTOR BACK FROM THE TRANSMISSION.  

THE HYDRAULIC OIL CAN LOOK VERY CLEAN EVEN LIKE NEW AND THE SCREEN CAN STILL BE RESTRICTED OR PLUGGED SO THAT OIL CAN NOT RETURN TO THE PUMP IN PROPER QUANTITY.  IF THE HYDRAULIC MOTORS ARE NOT WORKING PROPERLY AND THE PUMP IS TURNING CLEAN THE SCREEN/FILTER.  IT IS AMAZING HOW LITTLE BUILD UP OR THE WRONG KIND OF BUILD UP ON THE SCREEN WILL SLOW AND STOP THE WHOLE SYSTEM.  

WE USUALLY FIND A SLIMY COATING PLUGGING THE SCREEN AND SOME TIMES LITTLE PIECES OF RUBBER AND TRASH IF THE HOSES HAVE BEEN REPAIRED RECENTLY.   WE CAN CLEAN THE SCREEN WITH RAGS AND RINSE IT IN DIESEL TO FINALIZE THE CLEANING.   RE-INSTALL THE SCREEN AND IF THE SYSTEM STARTS SLOWING CLEAN THE SCREEN AGAIN OR AS MANY TIMES AS NECESSARY UNTIL THE SCREEN IS CLEAN WHEN YOU CHECK IT.  YOU WILL GRADUALLY CLEAN THE SYSTEM.  THE PUMP WE THOUGHT WAS BAD IS MOST OFTEN STILL GOOD. 

IT IS PREFERABLE TO HAVE A SCREEN THAT CAN BE EASILY CLEANED AND REUSED RATHER THAN FILTER ELEMENTS THAT HAVE TO BE REPLACED.  A TOP OPENING CANISTER WITH "O" RING SEAL ON A TWIST OPEN TOP PIECE WITH A BASKET SCREEN IS THE BEST BECAUSE IT CAN BE OPENED WITH THE LEAST OIL SPILLAGE AND MESS.  MOST SCREENS AND FILTERS HAVE BOLT ON TOPS OR BOTTOMS, ARE HARDER AND MESSIER TO CLEAN AND ARE LESS LIKELY TO GET CLEANED.  EXAMPLE OF THE BEST STYLE SCREEN/FILTER PHOTO A(40K);

2    THERE ARE ALSO LIMITED PASS FILTERS THAT CLEAN PART OF THE HYDRAULIC FLUID FLOW.  THESE CAN BE CLEANED AND REUSED UNTIL THE SYSTEM IS VERY CLEAN THEN CHANGED TO A NEW FILTER.  THE SCREEN FILTER IS THE PLACE THAT STOPS THE UNIT FROM WORKING.  

3    WATER IS HEAVIER THAN OIL AND FUELS SO IT SETTLES TO THE BOTTOM OF THE CONTAINER IT IS IN.  

4    IT IS NORMAL FOR CONDENSATION MOISTURE TO COLLECT IN MOST HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS.  SOME MOISTURE CAN BE REMOVED BY DRAINING THE LOWEST POINT OF THE HYDRAULIC RESERVOIR OR THE PAPER FILTER HOUSING EVERY MORNING.  IF THERE IS EXCESSIVE MOISTURE THE HYDRAULIC FLUID WILL BE WHITE.  

5    ON LARGE SYSTEMS ESPECIALLY IN COUNTRIES AND LOCATIONS WERE SUPPLIES ARE LIMITED AND EXPENSIVE HYDRAULIC OIL CAN BE CLEANED AND REUSED.  HYDRAULIC OIL IS SELDOM SUBJECTED TO THE CONTAMINANTS AND THE TEMPERATURES THAT ENGINE LUBRICATING OIL IS SUBJECTED TO SO IT LASTS MUCH LONGER IN FACT ALMOST INDEFINITELY.  IT IS POSSIBLE TO WARM OIL TO 218 TO 238 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT (40 TO 46 DEGREES CELSIUS) AT SEA LEVEL AND EVAPORATE OUT THE WATER.  HIGHER ELEVATIONS IT TAKES LESS TEMPERATURE RISE TO EVAPORATE OUT THE WATER.  

6    THERE ARE HYDRAULIC OIL CLEANING POWER TOOLS (PUMPS, SCREENS, FILTERS AND COLLECTION TANKS) BUT THEY ARE SELDOM USED BECAUSE THEY ARE EXPENSIVE UNLESS THEY ARE USED AT HIGH VOLUME OR OVER MANY YEARS FOR ONE OR TWO MACHINES, MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THEM AND MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW THAT HYDRAULIC OIL IS NOT USUALLY DAMAGED JUST DIRTY.

2    IT IS GETTING HARDER TO GET PARTS FOR OLD MACHINERY AND ITEMS OF ALL TYPES OLDER THAN 1980 EVEN FOR ONE OF THE BEST KNOWN BRANDS WORLD WIDE, THE CATERPILLAR BRAND.  WE HAVE SEEN THIS TREND MOVING TO ONLY 10 YEARS AND LESS PARTS AVAILABILITY OVER THE NEXT DECADE.  THE FUTURE WILL BE "THROW AWAY" OR "RECYCLE" OR JUST IN TIME PARTS EVEN IN THE FIRST 10 YEARS AFTER MANUFACTURE.   WE ARE SEEING AUTOMATED MASS PRODUCTION CHEAPER THAN REPAIR LABOR AND SPARE PARTS  WAREHOUSING COSTS FOR BIGGER MACHINERY NOT JUST ELECTRONICS AND SMALLER HARD GOODS.  SEND PHOTOS FOR REASONABLE LOCATION AND ESTIMATES. 

WE HAVE EVEN TRIED A FEW YARDS THAT HAD MANY OLD MACHINES AND THEY WANTED SO MUCH TO TAKE THE PARTS OFF THAT IT WAS NOT WORTH IT ESPECIALLY SINCE THE SAME PARTS ARE USUALLY BAD AND MOST MACHINES OF THE SAME MODELS AND YEARS.

3    MANY PARTS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE.   THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY DIFFERENT MODELS AND NO ECONOMICALLY EFFICIENT WAY TO STORE PARTS FOR ALL OF THEM SO THE MANUFACTURE'S WAREHOUSING DEPARTMENTS ARE BEING PROMPTED BY THE COMPUTER PROGRAMS, BASED ON "EFFICIENCY" AND "RETURN ON INVESTMENT" STUDIES, TO CLEAR THE SHELVES OF PARTS THAT HAVE NOT MOVED IN SUFFICIENT QUANTITY OVER A VARYING PERIOD OF YEARS.  TO DO THIS THEY GENERALLY HAVE "SCRAPERS" COME IN AND CLEAN UP.   THERE WAS A GENERALLY FOLLOWED "LAW" THAT A MANUFACTURER HAD TO HAVE PARTS AND REPAIRS OR EXCHANGE FOR AT LEAST 10 YEARS.  THIS IS NOT THE CASE WITH MOST MANUFACTURES AROUND THE WORLD NOW.  IN THE U.S. THE STANDARD IS FOR 7 YEARS SUPPORT NOW.  MANY ITEMS MADE IN CHINA ARE ONE RUN ONLY AND WILL NEVER BE MADE THE SAME. 

THE "SCRAPERS" CANNOT AFFORD TO WAREHOUSE EVEN $3,000. CRANK SHAFTS AND OTHER EXPENSIVE MACHINED PARTS THAT MIGHT NOT MOVE FOR MANY YEARS IF EVER SO THE SCRAPERS SELL THEM FOR SCRAP METAL.  THE METAL RECYCLERS ARE IN THE SAME SITUATION.  EVEN THE BEST MATERIALS CANNOT SURVIVE IN SALABLE CONDITION WITHOUT PROPER CLIMATE CONTROLLED STORAGE AND A SYSTEM TO FIND THEM AGAIN.  SEND PHOTOS FOR REASONABLE LOCATION AND ESTIMATES. 

4    THE GLOBAL MARKET IS MOVING RAPIDLY TO A "MAKE AS NEEDED PARTS SYSTEM" USING COMPUTER CONTROLLED EQUIPMENT THE SAME AS ABOUT 50% OF THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT IS MANUFACTURED  NOW.  THIS WILL SAVE AN ESTIMATED 50% MINIMUM ON PARTS COST, MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE PARTS FOR MORE DIFFERENT MACHINES AND ACTUALLY REDUCE THE TIME TO FIND, AND SHIP PARTS WORLD WIDE.
